PROGRAM: Affordable Housing with Vertical Gardens
In my precedent Cite Manifeste, a two story housing project designed by Duncan Lewis Block, the trellis, a vertical garden is organized by the grid of the designed building. The trellis is designed along the exterior of the housing project and extends and attaches to the roof, which isaccessible.
The building is a flattening of the context and the processes that generated its form: It is an “extracted” architecture, as an index of the existing city conducive to the invention of potential territories. This project takes up the entire plot up to the fence. The project no longer stops at the walls, it contaminates the neighborhood.
The design of this housing project is influenced by how Baltimore’s redlined areas suffer frombeing a heat island. Materials found in buildings, roads, sidewalks, and many alleyways absorbthe sun’s heat and emit it back into the air, raising the surrounding surface temperatures.Sidewalks are barren and trees are lacking and relatively new. High poverty rates are associatedwith less tree coverage.

This two story housing project, designed along a 5’x5’ grid, on both levels, proposes a strategically organized vertical and horizontal green space, with 25 single living units, 467 sq ft and 25 multigenerational units 1460 sq ft.
A cluster of single living units are arranged in a pinwheel to form a module repeated along a grid.
The units are unified by a centralsemi-private garden, vegetables, herbs, and root produce, accessible directly from the kitchen. Other Semi-private gardens form inthe interstitial spaces. This project makes a consolidated unit plan around semi-private space that is outdoors. I adapt the trellis asa structure that provides shade, privacy. The rooftop gardens of the single living units on the lower floor link the multigenerational units on the upper floor.
Like my precedent an interiority takes shape while the constructed garden becomes vertical, as well ashorizontal. The project is built over time and movement.
