"Ballet of Trees"
A series of Charcoal Drawings from Advanced Drawing
Under the guidance of Sue Gussow
a poem by Khadijah Coppin
No tree is the same; they lean and compete for the sun.
If they could, would they run?
Rooted in the earth
They stretch out towards the sky; no tree is alike
Their branches weave and collide and intertwine,
Winding
Dancing still to a melody that is visible
and also, sublime.
Yearning towards the heavens
Leaning
Piercing the sky
No tree is alike, in their bark and nature,
Their status and stature
in their nature their leaves scatter,
debris of the trees, flowing with the wind and all the matter
as time progresses, they shed leaving trunks and branches bare, a signal of winter approaching
Solid, thick transparencies
Bark not just a static thing
Weight and strength rooted into the ground, not to be overturned by powerful winds
Trees raised
Trees unafraid
rigid trunks
Rooted deep into the ground
Branches extending as composition
as frame
Your eyes carry across the page
A movement of parts
And wholes
Of thinness
For nests
of crows
No tree is the same
I wonder what they have heard
What they keep secret
What they wish to learn or unlearn
Or discern

Started out drawing individual trees then collective front/elevational views and then a collage of different types and different perspectives. I did scribbles in Arabic and English, attempting to weave the language with the trees. Themes of transparency.
